Show Up To Score
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:23-24
One of my fondest memories from our son's high school basketball career was the night he scored his 1000th point. We were excited to say the least. He had worked so hard, for many years playing basketball and overcoming many trials. Standing 6'6 and towering over everyone I know (except his dad) many people find it hard to believe that he was ever shorter or smaller than other boys; but he was. And like many boys, he suffered taunting and teasing at the hands of older boys. But he fought his way through, practicing basketball all hours of the day. (On more than one occasion we were notified by neighbours that his dribbling and shooting on the court we added in our backyard was interfering with their quiet time in the evening.) But how do you tell a 14 year old boy to stop playing outside? Stop being active and? After all, we had invested so much energy ensuring he wasn't playing video games all hours of the day/night!) My flesh wanted to let him keep playing, but my Spirit said, "Be a witness. Encourage him and bring him in. And Jonah was always so gracious with his, "Just five more minutes mom?" To which I conceded.
And it paid off. It was so awesome to watch and experience. In that moment all the struggles and complaints from neighbours became just a distant memory, paling in comparison to the joy of watching an overcomer in action; literally.
I have always been amazed at how Jonah lives out the scriptures. Even to this day, as a young married man. And I know it is the truth of God's Word that He stands on during his most trying times. I've watched Him turn to, and lean on God when no one else could help him. And I am in awe.
But here's the other thing. None of us knew that he would be scoring his 1000th point on that night. Not even Jonah. We knew it was going to happen that season, but we were confident he was still nearly 100 points away, not a mere eighteen as we found out when we arrived at the game.
So it came as a surprise. He was so much closer than we thought. And what if he slacked off over the years? There's only so many opportunities to score.
But he never stopped working.
And that night he scored. Big!
What about you?
Are you on the edge of a breakthrough that you're not even aware of? Could you be getting ready to experience a transformation if you will just keep moving forward? Pushing through the pain and trials?
I think so.
Like reaching a milestone of 1000 points, weight loss is a series of good days and bad days. All leading up to one major victory if you refuse to give up.
Trust my mama's heart here.
I lived through the struggles my son had to overcome throughout the years. Sometimes I think it was harder for me than it was him. Kids are a lot more resilient than adults, it seems.
There were even times Jonah shared with me that he thought maybe he didn't want to play basketball anymore.
(Deep down I knew that wasn't the truth, but the journey, at times, was truly difficult.)
Friend, your journey in weight loss may feel difficult too, but know this;
Be encouraged today to show up, ready to play.
Who knows, you may score big today.
You never know when God is going to move in your life.
But you have to show up to score!
Let's Pray.
Dear God,
I need a breakthrough. I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know I am called to have faith without seeing, and I want to do that today. God, I seek a miracle in my weight loss. A revelation that only You can provide. I know You need my cooperation, so I am committed to showing up today. I will get in the game and give it all I have. Thank You God for being the best coach I could ever have.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ I pray,
Amen
